Phu Bai International Airport plays as a key role in the development strategy of socio-economy, culture, and regional defense of Thua Thien – Hue Province and the northern Central, serves as a bridge to connect other provinces and countries.
Moreover, Phu Bai International Airport plays an important role in exploiting the tourism potential of Hue - Ancient capital as well as facilitating trading activities, attracting investment projects and developing the potential industry, such as, education, treatment, ecotourism, etc. and contributes to bring Thua Thien – Hue province to become a centrally run city in 2014.
1. Location
Phu Bai International Airport is situated on 1A Highway, at Huong Thuy Town, Thua Thien – Hue Province, 13 kilometers away from the center of Hue city (about 20 mins by car) southeastwards.
Aerodrome reference point is an intersection of the center of E1 TWY and 09/27 RWy; identified by World geodetic system 1984(WGS-84): 16º24’02.30”N - 107º42’2310”E.
High aerodrome reference point against the mean sea level: 14.65 meters
2. Development process
Phu Bai airport was built by the French colonialists in 1940, with compacted land runway 1280m x 40 m, and then being improved as bituminous concrete runway 1800m x 40 m.
After the national unity, Phu Bai airport which was established and put into operation on 26 March 1976. The airport was used as dual-purpose civil and military designs.
On 25th April, 1994, the Prime Minister approved Decision No. 191/TTg promulgating the plan of improvement, expansion of 900 meters of Phu Bai Airport’s runway eastwards to accommodate medium-range aircraft and making Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam establish the master plan of construction of Phu Bai airport.
On 29th August, 2007, Minister of Transport approved Phu Bai airport becoming Phu Bai International Airport, being the fourth international airport nationwide.
On 17th July, 2009, the Prime Minister approved Decision regarding approving the planning of Phu Bai International Airport towards 2020 and orientation to 2030, upgrading to 4E-level airport, level – I military airport, dual-purpose civil and military designs; accommodating B767, B777-200LR and similar types of aircrafts.
From 2000 – 2004, Phu Bai International Airport was invested the following facilities: lighting system; ILS; AW11 system; DVOR/DME tower (2001); LOC, GP, DME Tower; expansion of terminal, apron; parking lot. The airport opened 24/24, and served as the alternate aerodrome for domestic and international route (upon Noi Bai Int’l airport, Da Nang Int’l airport were overload).
3. Passenger Terminal
After putting in operation for a long time, Phu Bai Int’l Airport was downgraded. That affected to the air operation. The early of 2013, Airports Corporation of Vietnam invested the project of “Repair of runway and passenger terminal building of Phu Bai International Airport” with the total investment of nearly 700 million Dong from the Investment and Development Fund of ACV. The project was completed and put into operation in September, 2013.
After being repaired and expanded, the runway increased its width from 40 meters up to 45 meters, with dimension of 27000 meters x 45 meters. The airport reaches the 4D-level in accordance with the ICAO aerodrome classification, capable of accommodating medium-range aircraft, such as A321 with full loading capacity and flexible for further expansion.
The passenger terminal building covers of 6,500 square meters, reaches Level C according to IATA Level-of-service Standards, capable of serving 1.5 million passengers per annum, accommodating 800 passengers and 03 aircrafts A321 in peak hour. The passenger terminal building is well furnished with modern facilities such as information system, baggage handling system, security screening system, check-in system, flight information display system, broadcast system, etc. to meet the high-quality passenger service and ensure aviation security and safety.
Car parking with garden was collaterally repaired, able to facilitate 160 parking spaces of various types of automobile. Moreover, it has been well equipped with light system.
4. Airport operation
At present, the three carriers comprising of Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Jetstar Pacific are operating the route Hanoi – Hue – Hanoi and HoChiMinh city – Hue – HoChiMinh City by A320, A321 with the frequency of 24 flights/day.
In 2014, Phu Bai International Airport served 1,159,260 passengers, increasing by 71.1% compared to that in 2013, facilitated 3,728 tons of cargo, increasing by 273.4% compared to that in 2013, accommodated 7,976 flights, increasing 150.8% compared to that in 2013.
