On April 19, 2025, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) held the Groundbreaking and Site Handover Ceremony for the Expansion and Upgrade Project of Ca Mau Airport in Ca Mau Province. The project has a total investment of approximately VND 2,400 billion (~USD 92 million) and was launched as the nation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025).
Ca Mau Airport is a domestic airport with a strategically important position in terms of national defense and security. It also serves as a vital air transportation gateway connecting the southernmost region of the country to Vietnam’s economic and political centers.
However, after many years of operation, Ca Mau Airport’s existing infrastructure remains small-scale, with a 1,500-meter-long runway that only accommodates small, short-haul aircraft (such as the ATR72). It does not meet the growing transportation, economic, tourism, and national defense needs of Ca Mau Province and the surrounding area.
The investment in expanding and upgrading Ca Mau Airport not only addresses urgent needs in civil aviation operations but also plays an important role in ensuring national defense and security, promoting socio-economic development, boosting tourism, and attracting investment to the Mekong Delta region.
The project "Expansion and Upgrade of Ca Mau Airport" was approved in principle by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 1188/QĐ-TTg dated October 15, 2024. The project's goal is to expand and upgrade Ca Mau Airport to accommodate A320, A321 aircraft, and equivalents; drive economic, cultural, and social development; and enhance national defense and security for Ca Mau Province and the region. ACV is assigned as the project owner, using the corporation’s own capital for implementation.
The project, categorized as a Group A project, has a total investment of approximately VND 2,400 billion and includes the following main components:
- Construction of runway 09-27 with dimensions of 2,400 meters x 45 meters, using concrete pavement structure to accommodate A320/A321 aircraft and equivalents.
- Construction of a 128-meter-long, 15-meter-wide taxiway at runway end 09, using concrete pavement structure.
- Construction of an aircraft apron with a concrete pavement structure, capable of accommodating 3 parking positions for A320/A321 aircraft and equivalents, with dimensions of 182 meters x 112.5 meters.
- Renovation and expansion of the existing passenger terminal to increase capacity to 500,000 domestic passengers per year, with the potential to expand further to accommodate up to 1 million passengers per year as needed, along with the construction of supporting facilities.
The "Expansion and Upgrade of Ca Mau Airport" project is expected to be completed and operational within 18 months from the date of land handover.
As the project owner, ACV commits to working closely with local authorities, relevant agencies, and all stakeholders to ensure the project is implemented on schedule, in strict compliance with legal regulations, while ensuring construction quality, labor safety, environmental sanitation, and investment efficiency.
