In the joyful atmosphere heading towards the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Hai Phong Liberation Day – Heroic City (May 13, 1955 - May 13, 2025) and the Red Flamboyant Festival – Hai Phong 2025, on the afternoon of May 11, 2025, in Hai Phong, Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) held the groundbreaking ceremony for Package No. 6, "Construction of the Apron Expansion Project at Cat Bi International Airport (HKQT) – Phase 2"; with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Vietnam Airlines, contractors, and leaders of Hai Phong City.

Attending the groundbreaking ceremony were comrades: Do Thanh Trung – Deputy Minister of Finance; Nguyen Van Tung – Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the City People's Committee; along with leaders of some city departments, agencies, and Hai An district. From ACV was comrade Nguyen Tien Viet – Deputy General Director, the Board of Directors, employees of Cat Bi International Airport, and consulting units and construction contractors.

The "Apron Expansion Project – Phase 2" has a total investment of 1,151 billion VND (~44.53 million USD), built on an area of 13.68 hectares, which will increase the total number of parking stands to 28 Code C stands. Phase 2 is divided into 02 investment sub-phases including Phase 2.1 - accommodating 05 Code C aircraft parking stands and Phase 2.2 - accommodating 06 similar aircraft parking stands. With an additional 11 aircraft parking stands, Cat Bi International Airport will enhance its operational capacity, reduce congestion, ensure flight safety, and improve service quality.

The upgrading and expansion of the Cat Bi International Airport apron will effectively serve aviation services for domestic and international flights arriving at and departing from the Airport.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, ACV Deputy General Director Nguyen Tien Viet emphasized the particularly important role of Cat Bi International Airport in Vietnam's aviation network and for the socio-economic development of Hai Phong City as well as the surrounding area. Since the introduction of international routes in 2014, passenger traffic through the Airport has grown rapidly, exceeding the design capacity of Terminal T1 in 2024. Therefore, investing in the expansion of facilities at the Airport is essential, consistent with the goals and development orientation of local air transport in particular, and the national aviation industry in general, while also effectively serving aviation services for domestic and international flights arriving at and departing from the Airport.

In the future, the apron expansion project and the construction project of passenger terminal T2, upon completion and operation, along with the cargo terminal with a capacity of 100 thousand tons/year, will create a synchronous aviation operational infrastructure system, providing high-quality services according to international standards, enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnam's aviation industry, and contributing to the socio-economic development of Hai Phong City and the region.

With responsibility as the project manager and investor, ACV commits to closely coordinate with the local authorities, relevant agencies, and units to ensure the project is implemented on schedule, strictly adhering to procedures and legal regulations, ensuring construction quality, labor security and safety, environmental sanitation, and achieving optimal investment efficiency.
