During their visit to Da Nang City, on December 11, 2024, a delegation from the  Embassy of Canada in Hanoi and the Consulate General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City, led by Mrs. Joseé Rivard - Counsellor in charge of consular affairs and management at the Embassy in Hanoi, Mr. Siuki Kwan - Counsellor in charge of consular affairs and management at the Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City, and Mr. Brandon Justin Cove - Second Secretary and Deputy Consul, visited and worked at Da Nang International Airport to build close and necessary relationships in providing consular assistance to Canadian citizens in both routine and emergencies.

The delegation was warmly welcomed by Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of Da Nang International Airport, along with representatives from various affiliated units.

During the meeting, both sides discussed several important topics in a cooperative and friendly atmosphere, including:

  • Level of airport, dimension, and development plans;
  • The number of domestic and international flight routes, round trips; the airlines operating at the airport;
  • Updates on regulations that foreign passengers need to be aware of when traveling to/from Da Nang International Airport;
  • Common issues faced by foreign passengers at the airport;
  • Emergency medical support procedures at the airport;
  • Coordination procedures between airport operators and relevant government agencies at the airport: the Central Aviation Authority, Immigration Police, Airport Customs, etc., in handling cases involving foreign passengers with health issues either on the plane or at the terminal.

The delegation also shared information about a recent case involving an elderly Canadian citizen who needed assistance contacting family members and the Canadian Consulate when arriving at Da Nang Airport. For two consecutive days, an aviation security staff actively supported the citizen in reaching out to the Canadian consular authorities and safely reunited with their family. The Consular Delegation expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the Da Nang International Airport staff for their excellent assistance.

During the meeting, the leadership of Da Nang International Airport instructed relevant departments at Terminals T1 and T2 to update the work guidance documents regarding the consular contact points for Canadian citizens, including contact information for the Canadian Embassy and Consulate General. They also added the consular contact details of other embassies and consulates to the unified website of the Airport and Terminal 2 management unit (AHT).

After the meeting, the Canadian Consulate delegation sincerely thanked Da Nang International Airport for their warm, respectful, and thoughtful reception, which portrayed a positive image of the Vietnamese people and the airport staff. The delegation also expressed their hope that, following this visit, both sides would strengthen their relationship to promote and expand new flight routes between the two countries, and that the cooperation between Vietnam and Canada would continue to grow after 50 years of establishing formal diplomatic relations.
